How Healthy is Your Liver?

How Healthy is Your Liver?

Liver health is very important in Chinese medicine and now that spring has arrived, it is time to focus on getting your liver healthy. In Chinese medicine, spring is associated with the liver and the liver is one of the most important organs in the body. The main function of the liver is to spread and regulate the flow of qi (energy) through the body. When the liver is overloaded, toxins can build up and lead to stagnation in the blood flow and qi. Symptoms of an imbalanced liver can include anger, depression, irritability, nausea, digestive issues, dry eyes and skin, stiff muscles, and bruising.

There are many ways that you can try to improve your liver health.  Some ways to improve your liver health are:

  • Eliminate alcohol: Alcohol can damage and destroy liver cells which can lead to the buildup of fat in the liver.
  • Drink milk thistle tea: Milk thistle helps protect the liver cells from incoming toxins and encourages the liver to cleanse itself of harmful substances.
  • Drink lots of water
  • Drink apple cider vinegar: Vinegar is beneficial because it has a bitter and sour taste which will have a detoxifying effect on the liver.
  • Eat healthier foods: Foods that will help detoxify and strengthen the liver are garlic, grapefruit, beets, carrots, leafy green vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, apples, and grains like quinoa, millet, and buckwheat.
  • Avoid saturated fats: Try to eat more healthy fats such as almonds, coconut, walnuts, hemp, chia, flax, and avocado.
  • Exercise outdoors: All exercise and stretching will help the liver, but if you can exercise outside in the fresh air it will be more beneficial.
  • Do a Liver/Gallbladder cleanse
  • Acupuncture treatment: Acupuncture treatment can help improve the overall health of the liver as well as treat stress, anger, and frustration, which are often a result of disharmony in the liver.

So while you are doing spring cleaning in your house, you should also be thinking about doing some spring cleaning of your body and mind.
